Matthew Lyons
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
With over 35 years of experience in the medical device industry, Mr. Lyons has established himself as a pioneer. A 1986 graduate of Syracuse University with a BSME, Mr. Lyons began his career as a Development Engineer at Osteonics Corp. (now Stryker Orthopedics). In 1989, he joined Exactech Inc. as its first full-time employee and engineering manager, where he led the development of the company’s first porous-coated total hip system. By the early 1990s, Mr. Lyons joined his brother, William Lyons III, at their family business Brimfield Precision, Inc., where they built a leader in instrument and orthopedic implant manufacturing. The company was later acquired by Image Guided Systems. In 1996 Mr. Lyons co-founded Blackstone Medical, Inc. As President and CEO, Mr. Lyons grew the company’s sales to 100 million throughout the USA and 30 countries around the world, until it was acquired by Orthofix International (OFIX).
Building on his entrepreneurial legacy, Mr. Lyons founded Blue Slate, LLC, a consultancy specializing in device commercialization in U.S. and international markets. Additionally, he founded Cireca, LLC, a diagnostic company focused on the spectral identification of cancer signatures for early detection and therapy guidance.
Throughout his career, Mr. Lyons has been granted numerous patents in orthopedics and medical devices, reflecting his ongoing commitment to advancing the field of medical innovation.
Michael Lyons
Chief Operating Officer
With over 25 years of precision manufacturing and business experience, Michael Lyons serves as the COO of Extremity Medical, a role he officially assumed in 2014. Mr. Lyons plays a key role in the development of the company’s product portfolio and serves as a member of the board of directors.
A 1991 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Mr. Lyons has built a distinguished career in business leadership. His experience includes roles at Brimfield Precision (1993–1994), Principal Instruments (1994–1996), and Blackstone Medical (1996–2008). Before joining Extremity Medical, Mr. Lyons founded Streetlight Concepts, a firm focused on providing direction and support for start-up business ventures looking for success in their specific markets, a vision that aligns closely with his work at Extremity Medical.
Brian Smekal
Executive Vice President
Brian has brought over 20 years of product development, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, healthcare compliance, and operations experience in the regulated medical devices and human tissues industry. Brian first joined Extremity Medical in 2012 as the Director of Regulatory Affairs and has filled various roles since. Today, Brian’s responsibilities include developing Extremity Medical’s global regulatory strategies and approvals, maintenance of the Quality Management System, ensuring compliance with all healthcare regulations, and general management of Operations. Brian also has assumed responsibility for Extremity Medical’s international sales.
Brian received his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University in 2000. He continued his studies at Boston University in 2002, earning his Master of Science degree in Applied Anatomy and Physiology. Brian began his career in research and development at Etex Corporation (Cambridge, MA) in 2003, focusing on pre-clinical research of calcium phosphate bone graft substitutes, in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Brian’s Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance experiences grew with his positions at LifeCore Biomedical, Zimmer Spine and LifeCell Corporation working with dental implants, spine fixation devices, and human and porcine tissue products. Brian is passionate about advancing innovation in medical devices and bringing Extremity Medical’s technology to patients in need around the world.
Raymond Penzimer
Vice President of Product Development
Ray brings over 20 years of experience in designing and developing innovative medical devices, with a strong focus on the Orthopedic, Biologics, and Spine industries. A hands-on engineer, Ray is passionate about collaborating with world-class surgeons to bring cutting-edge solutions to the market for a wide range of surgical procedures. He has been a driving force in the development of multiple device patents and is the inventor behind several of these patented technologies.
Before joining Extremity Medical, Ray held key roles at Biomet (now Zimmer Biomet), where he led engineering efforts in both the Spine and Trauma divisions. He also served as a Project Engineer for Wright Medical Technology’s core biologics lines. Throughout his career, Ray has gained valuable experience in polymer manufacturing and scale-up during his time at Kensey Nash (now DSM) and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Pharmaceuticals.
Outside of his professional work, Ray enjoys spending time with his family, playing tennis, snowboarding, and volunteering in the Morristown community.
Steven L. Haddad, MD
Chief Clinical Officer
Haddad brings over 25 years of clinical, academic and industry experience, as he is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in ankle replacement surgery, complex ankle reconstruction, foot and ankle deformity correction, and ankle arthritis management. He is also an educator and researcher that has participated in numerous clinical and basic science research studies. Dr. Haddad received a bachelor’s degree in Honors Biology from the University of Michigan in 1985 and a Doctorate in Medicine from Johns Hopkins University in 1989. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Georgetown University and a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Haddad has served as faculty at both Northwestern University Medical School and University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
Haddad, has served as the CME Chair for the AAOS and the President of AOFAS, has developed numerous courses, authored over 50 publications, edited eight books, and delivered hundreds of scholarly presentations globally, including in Australia, South America, South Africa, North America, and Europe.
